Did you know?

Prabalgad Fort in its present form, was built during Bahmani Kingdom to keep an eye on North Konkan or monitor the ancient ports of Panvel and Kalyan.

Prabalgad Fort, also known as Kalavantin Durg is situated between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, at a height of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats.

The steps leading up to the fort are cut into the rock of the hill.

The British first had thought of developing Prabalgad as a place of cold hilly Matheran. But due to the lack of water, the thought has been left behind.

It was built at the pinnacle of the rocky plateau very close to Matheran. Previously, the fort was known as Muranajan until it was taken over and renamed by the Maratha forces under Shivaji’s rule.

In 1657 Shivaji Maharaj captured Prabalgad from the Mughals during the establishment of Kalyan – Bhivandi area. During the attack of Shivaji Maharaj, Kesarsingh a Mughal sardar was the governor of the fort he was the only Mughal sardar who gave a strong challenge to Shivaji Maharaj.

Prabalgad consists of a sister fort which is named as Irshalgad Fort. It is situated in the vicinity of the main fort. Irshalgad is comparatively smaller in area.

Through the study of caves on the fort, they can connect their era with Buddhist period. Due to the caves built on them, the rulers of Shilahar and Yadav in Uttarakhand named him as a military outpost and named it Muranan.

What's more?

A fort attracts attention from a fort on the way to Bombay, Pune. It is Prabalgad. The Ulhas river on the east, the Gadi river on the west, the Patalganga river to the south, Karnikala fort in Manikgad and south-west, and the nearby Irshalgad fort is surrounded by Murshan alias Prabalgad. There is an English “V” shaped hack in Prabalgad and his side-piece cone. The sunset that appears from Matheran’s “Sunset Point” is similar to that of Prabhadgad.
